Misty post-surgery pictures

6:15 PM

Misty's temperature is up so she's now on 3 antibiotics. They're not sure if it's inflammation from the surgery or infection. She has not eaten since mid afternoon and they will do more blood work if her temperature stays elevated. I will not post again tonight. I'm going to bed early since I slept poorly last night and have a cold & sore throat.

I will call them again before I leave for work in the morning.

1:30 PM

We just got back from seeing Misty, who is doing as well as can be expected after this type of surgery. She's running a slight fever and her surgeon says they may need to add a second antibiotic but she has eaten and is urinating so they know her kidneys are functioning. They showed us how much thread was in her, which appeared to be several feet, and they're sure they got it all. Her progress over the next 24 hours will determine when she can come home and when she does, she'll be restricted to one room unless one of us is home, since she must be supervised with limited physical activity during her recuperation.

Here are some pictures we took today. She was so happy to see us and when I put my finger in her paw, she curled her toes around it. Tears slid down my cheeks as she purred for me and began kneading. Our poor, sweet baby.

We didn't stay too long since we didn't want to wear her out, but she's doing so much better than yesterday. Both the surgeon and the veterinary technician caring for her say she's got a great personality. I already knew that!!

I'm kicking myself for not closing the door to the room where my sewing machine is. If I had, none of this would have happened. I couldn't sleep and was still up at 1AM last night with the other 3 cats all there, comforting me. I'm not sure they realize she isn't here since they don't seem to be looking around for her but I know they sense my emotions. Even Max, who isn't known for his lap kittyness, laid on my chest, put his forehead against mine and purred. That in itself is something, since he generally doesn't like that type of closeness. It's amazing how they can sense when something is wrong.

Please, please everyone, check around your home for things like thread, string, yarn, tape or anything long, and especially this time of year, holiday decorations that can be chewed and swallowed. I'd hate to hear about another cat or dog going through what Misty just did.

I will be calling the vet early this evening for an update on her and will post if there is anything new. Again, thank you all for your great support. It means so much.

I'm SO glad for your good report and to know she's doing better. Her poor Misty tummy! But she looks good and her skin color is good.

Please don't kick yourself-we all do our best to safeguard our furbabies' health but we are human..shoot, that thread could have clung to ANYTHING and made it out of your sewing room, it was probably a complete accident. Not that you shouldn't be vigilant, but just don't guilt yourself to pieces. Save all that energy for taking care of Misty when she comes home. I'm thinkin' about you and prayin' for Misty's continued recovery!

Our Nemo once swallowed a sewing needle with thread attached and I know how hard it is to not feel responsible for it. The important thing is that it is taken care and that Misty will be alright. We can always tell when our mom is upset or not feeling well too and we like to lay on her. We are sending lots of purrs your way today.

Thank you for sharing the pictures of Misty! The one of her holding your finger is just so sweet! Please don't beat yourself up about the thread. One of our sisters before us was a rubber band-a-holic and we can't tell you how many times Mom had to give her the hydrogen peroxide to get her to puke them up. Misty is still in our purrayers and to your Mommie too. Great job you guys are doing comforting her!

Bless her heart. We are so glad that she grabbed your hand and purred for you. Yes, we believe the other cats know that she isn't there, and they know that you are very upset. Please don't take on the guilt of the sewing room. Cats get into things. There are always things hanging around this house that the cats can get into one way or another.
Like Max said, you may have saved another 10 cats' lives by posting this blog. Hang in there, and many {{{hugs}}} and many many purrs to you and your babies.

Misty sweetheart we are really pleased that you are doing ok, and will purr and pray for you and your mum.

from the mama-
Misty's mum, please don't blame yourself. As everyone has been saying, we can only do our best. I try so hard to clean up after sewing, but I still find stray bits of thread. I actually cut most of my hair off after finding strands in Fuifui's poop, and being terrified that it would have the same effect as string.

Your actions after the event show what a great mum you are, ensuring she got the treatment she needed quickly. The refusal to wait until things got drastic before getting her attention probably saved her life.

We hope you feel better when you wake up:)

I am echoing what every cat and bean has already said about not blaming yourself. We know you are great cat parents and do all you can to avoid accidents, but we also know that we cats are buggers for finding stuff we shouldn't.
